Great Video Game Music: Snowed In Edition

Where I live it is forecasted that we could be getting up to 20 inches of snow by the end of the weekend. The thought of snow makes me want to bundle up and listen to great winter/snow-themed game music, so lets do it!

Final Fantasy VII - Buried in Snow

To me, this is the quintessential piece of game music with a winter-like feel to it. It is calming, warm, and familiar. It brings me back to a time when snow was magical. It got you out of school and you got to play with your friends for hours on end. As an adult, snow is just a pain in the ass.

Bonk's Revenge - Level Five

I selected this not only because it is another example of warm, inviting music that fits with any snowy backdrop you can imagine, but because Bonk's Revenge and its soundtrack are criminally underrated. This is probably due to the TurboGrafx 16 not being very popular in the US, but it is worth it to track down this game and enjoy one of my favorite 16 bit platformers.

Mario Kart 64 - Frappe Snowland

This song somehow combines the winter feelings as mentioned above while almost feeling like it could be used on a beach level as well. Who cares, just watch out for the snowmen wearing fez hats.

Donkey Kong Country - Snow Mountain

This one was picked not only because it carries through it the feeling of being outside in the snow, but because it is hella creepy.  With this excellent piece of music I feel like I woke up in a cave in the woods in the middle of winter. It is way more ambient and less jovial/warm than the rest of my selections, but it still feels at home.

Duck Tales - Himilayas

This one takes me back to a more carefree time in my life, one where I spent my days waist-deep in the snow while trying to use my walking cane as a pogo stick.

And to remind you that winter doesn't last forever, here is some spectacular music from Outrun, a game with a setting that couldn't be farther away from winter.

Outrun - Splash Wave

I plan on making music showcases a reoccuring thing, so look forward to the next chapter. See ya!
